The Temple of Remembrance in Ipswich is more than a building, it is a deeply symbolic Grade II listed landmark, created as a quiet space for honour, reflection, and community memory.
When Ipswich Borough Council entrusted Bell with its internal refurbishment and heritage restoration, the focus was to protect the building’s historic character while bringing new life to a space that means so much to so many.
The project required a sensitive balance of tradition and technical skill. Every element, from the painted surfaces to the historic timber flooring, needed careful handling, thoughtful planning, and heritage craftsmanship of the highest standard.
Specialist Heritage Refurbishment Works
Inside the Temple, our teams carried out a full strip back of all painted surfaces, removing aged coatings with precision to avoid damaging the delicate original substrates. Cracks were repaired, surfaces stabilised, and architectural details, including mouldings and memorial features, were restored with the care they deserved.
The aim throughout this heritage refurbishment project was always to enhance, never replace, the character that gives the building its emotional and historical significance.
Timber Floor Restoration
Equally important was the restoration of the original timber flooring. The boards were meticulously sanded and finished using heritage-appropriate products, designed to protect the wood for years to come. Damaged sections were replaced with carefully matched materials so the finished floor feels authentic, unified, and true to the building’s story.
